Professional Development with Roberta Hunter.
The teachers at Pt. England School are very fortunate to have Professional Development sessions with Dr.Roberta Hunter, Massey University. She originally developed the pedagogical approaches used in the Developing Mathematics Inquiring Communities (DMIC) project and has overseen the implementation of the project in low-decile schools across New Zealand.
Session One

Children should be doing mathematics with an inquiring mind. They should be doing the learning and thinking.

Developing Mathematical inquiry:
What we do in Maths?
We have knowledge and strategies but can’t practise them.
Share your workings prove your answer.
Arguing about their thinking.
Asking a questioning and challenging them. (kids challenging each other)
Knowing what questions to ask.
Explanation Questions:
Tell me bit more-teacher talk move
Teacher facilitating discussions.
Children ask question: How did you do this bit? Where did you get those numbers from.?
Show me another way.
Children should be able to explain eg. What did you do here?
Justification questions:
Why?
Prove it?
